Meet our Donors – Michael and Mary Murray
Passion for Catholic Education
As active parishioners at Our Lady of the Assumption for 57 years, Michael and Mary Murray were blessed with three children, five grandchildren, and a happy marriage of 64 years.
“Mary and I always felt strongly about providing a living legacy as a return on the wonderful gift God has given us through a happy and rewarding life together,” said Michael. He reflected that as they matured, they became concerned with the secularization of society, particularly as it affected children. He noted, “There needs to be a nurturing environment grounded in the Catholic faith to provide a spiritual and academic environment for each child.”
Several years ago at a Knights of Columbus Council 15161 brainstorming session, the Council was searching for activities that the Knights could do on an ongoing basis. Michael suggested creating an endowment fund in support of Catholic education. Specifically, the distributions from the endowment fund would go to Our Lady of the Assumption School for tuition assistance for incoming students.
Michael and Mary’s vision was realized when they made a gift in 2014 at the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia to create The Knights of Columbus Council 15161 Endowment Fund. In 2015-2016, Michael fundraised tirelessly to grow the scholarship fund with his fellow Knights. The Knights of Columbus Council 15161 makes annual gifts to the fund, but gifts are not limited to the Knights. “Anyone can contribute,” added Michael.
Mary passed away in November 2017, but her legacy and giving spirit lives on in her husband Michael and in their gift of education to the parish and the Catholic school they care so much about.
